My Story
Congratulations on making it here! Acknowledging that you may need some support speaks of great courage, so kudos to you!
My name is Mathilde (pronounce as in Waltzing Matilda), originally from the Netherlands, I have called New Zealand home since 1997. My 3 children were born and raised here, and all are now amazing young adults, of whom I am incredibly proud!
Since my training as a Social Worker in my early twenties, I have worked with whānau who were doing life with or around a health condition. Whether it was a parent or a child with a chronic or terminal condition, or a disability, I never felt I could do enough to help, but I learned that a little bit of support goes a long way, and that support makes a huge difference!
When I had my own children, far away from my family, I experienced firsthand that even though the circumstances did not change, when I felt supported, I felt like I could move mountains, because I knew that someone had my back.
In the past decade, I worked with whānau who received precious tamariki with complex medical needs in their midst. I was honoured to be part of some of the wonderful support organisations we have in NZ. We have skilled and compassionate medical teams, and much preparation goes into the arrival and care of the precious little one, but one thing bugged me…
There was little support for the post-natal mother. As the birth giver, she is required to give so much of herself, while she is also tasked with putting her body back together after 9 months of pregnancy, not to speak of giving birth. And who prepares her, and her partner for the roller coaster time that follows?
Over the years I observed the incredible hardship our medical parents go through, the pressure on their personal resources, and relationships is equal to none. Each child is incredibly loved and nurtured, each milestone celebrated, and each moment worth it, but to live it requires unparalleled strength and endurance.
I believe in setting people up for success, and starting the journey strong. When you feel supported, you can move mountains. It looks hard right now, and you’re not wrong, it’s a journey of endurance, but inside you you have more courage than you know, you have unbelievable strength, and wonderful wisdom to pick up life again, find joy, and grow relationships.
It is my deep, deep passion to help you be as prepared for this journey as possible, to help you find what is inside to start off strong on this journey. Together. Not alone.
It would be my honour to journey with you for a while.
